Up The Buttress 2016

It’s Buttress Time Again,

Get Your Cow Bells Out!

The success of the quirky ‘Up the Buttress’ timed hill climb event has meant that it’s staged again this year. This will be part of the South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival 2016. Each year the event gets bigger and better with more entrants and this year, with cycling success at the Olympics, it is expected to attract even more interest.

Participants range from those wanting a bit of fun to the fiercely competitive; attracting roadies, mountain bikers and cyclo cross riders, all wanting to take on the nemesis that is the Buttress. Each year we have seen a new Queen and King of the Hill and this year could again see a new champion of the cobbles. The history books are stacked with some cracking times and a course record set in 2013 of 1 min 46 seconds.

This famous cobbled incline (it’s a one in three gradient in places!) out of the market town of Hebden Bridge up towards the medieval village of Heptonstall is part of national cycle network route 68. The gradient and terrain makes for a brilliant spectator event for heckling, cheering and cow bell shaking!

The event has generated lots of interest from the local bike businesses and several have donated some fantastic prizes; this year promises to be the same with prizes for fastest male and female rider in senior categories and plenty of spot prizes.

This year there will be another super bike prize which will be raffled off so everyone who registers for just £10.00 will have a chance of winning.

To enter, simply turn up on the day and register at the desk at the bottom of the Buttress on Hanging Royd Lane on Saturday 10th September. Racing starts at midday, sign on is by the old bridge on Old Gate from 11am.
