Spain to Norway on a bike called Reggie with Andrew Sykes

Posted on Feb 27, 2017 at 22:32 PM by Shaun

Elland based author, Andrew Sykes releases his third book on May 11th. In April he’s at Square Chapel in Halifax talking about his adventures.

With two European cycling adventures already under his belt, Andrew was ready for a new challenge. Exchanging his job as a teacher in Oxfordshire for an expedition on Reggie the bike, he set off on his most daring trip yet: a journey from Spain to Norway – from Europe’s geographical south to its northernmost point. Join the duo as they take on an epic journey across nearly 8000 km of Europe, through mountains, valleys, forests and the open road, proving that no matter where you’re headed, life on two wheels is full of surprises.

Tour de Yorkshire 2017

Posted on Apr 20, 2017 at 17:40 PM by Shaun

Stage 1 named the ‘Coast & Wolds’ starts in Bridlington and finishes in Scarborough.

Stage 2 is the ‘Iconic Market Towns’ route, starting in Tadcaster with a Harrogate finish.

Stage 3 named ‘Yorkshire terrier’ starts in Bradford and finishes at Fox Valley.

Calderdale welcomes the third stage of the race on Sunday April 30th, this time through the lower valley. The race offers 194k of route and 3,500 metres of climbing across eight categorised climbs!

Entering Calderdale from Northowram, the race descends towards Stump Cross before turning right and past Shibden Mill Inn. Cyclists will then make the sharp, steep, cobbled ascent up Lee Lane, more commonly known as Shibden Wall, this 0.8km climb at 15.5% gradient is a beast!.

Some may remember this section of route featured in the 1988 Milk Race and proved so tough that the riders of the 1988 Kellogg’s Tour (Sean Kelly, no less) climbed up on the pavement, resulting in a satisfying Mexican wave of spectators pirouetting off the asphalt and onto the cobbles to watch the thin line, featuring Joey McLoughlin and Yvon Madiot, ride up to the summit.

Cyclists head down towards Halifax, skirt the town and ascend up Beacon Hill Road and out towards Southowram. Riders will then race towards Brighouse, through the town and out through Clifton before entering Kirklees.
